To all Texas and National politicians and influencers,
By signing this pledge you agree to the following terms, which ensure the safety of Texas students and students across the nation. We believe that the responsibility of protecting students from any form of gun violence does not rest upon schools. It is your duty as public officials to prevent this threat from ever occurring. Despite this, draconian measures have been forced upon districts across the state and nation. The changes to campuses include increased police and assault-style weapon presences on campus and the arming of teachers. Our schools, for example, have begun locking all but one entrance to our school at all times, creating a hostile learning environment for us by making students feel barricaded in classrooms and making ever-present the awareness of imminent danger. We have taken action on our campus by demanding that our school create a committee composed of all campus-stakeholders, including students, to address issues of safety and inclusion on campus. Now it is up to you to take action on the proven reforms that we need to protect students. Preventing gun violence does not include militarizing school campuses; excessive security is a distraction from our learning environment.
2. Take a side on gun control, not neutral. It is important for our officials to have a clear stance (accessible to the public) on gun control. This means a written statement, containing a stance on..
3. Vote with the best interest of their constituents/students, and take actions that ensure the safety of their community. Vote no on the Concealed Carry Reciprocity Act or like legislation 4. Dedicate more funds to mental health research and professionals. Although we do not believe that mental health is the main cause of gun violence, an increase in the amount of accessible mental health professionals on campus would be a step in the right direction in any case. |
