This challenge was created to showcase the ridiculousness of the genuine proposals made by political leaders to prohibit gun violence in schools, sprouting from the idea of one politician's plan to arm classrooms with large buckets of stones to protect themselves from possible active shooters.
In no way is this challenge meant to mock or trivialize gun violence.
We are not attempting to take advantage of these tragedies to opportunistically get a laugh, but rather to bring attention to the ridiculously insufficient and predictably contrived ways that our political leaders are attempting to "fix" the situation at hand.
#BetterThanABucket is a way to highlight this hypocrisy and bring attention to the need to make a genuine change and put an end to gun violence. Students know that there are proven solutions to gun violence and it is these that our political leaders should be focusing on--not silly interventions that ultimately put the onus on students and teachers to protect themselves.
We encourage others to use the hashtag #BetterThanABucket and create a video showcasing ideas that are “better” (meaning even more ridiculous and out-of-touch than the proposition to give students buckets of rocks to fend off potential armed intruders) and share it on social media.
Humor has been used historically to resist against efforts made my the government to restrict our personal safety and rights. Think of it as modernized political cartoons; create your own and spread the message by retweeting, posting your videos, and using #BetterThanABucket.
Please remember to consider sensitivity and morality towards this sensitive topic when producing your video. We ask that you do not feature intruders in your video AT ALL, and focus on the ridiculous responses students are asked to partake in.
